The Knowledge Exchange Institute for Geriatric Nursing Education was an outcome of the work of the Curriculum Committee of the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE). Held at Brock University, May 6-8, 2009, it brought together 21 faculty and 10 PhD students from across Canada.

This knowledge transfer event for current and future educators in Canadian baccalaureate nursing programs was funded by NICE and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) with contributions of tools from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, the Canadian Coalition for Seniors Mental Health, and the Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium, a John A. Hartford Foundation funded project of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

The Knowledge Exchange Insitute was designed to (1) transfer new research based evidence and knowledge about care of older persons to Canadian nursing educators; (2) provide Canadian nursing educators with tools to incorporate evidence based gerontology and geriatrics content in undergraduate curriculum; and (3) engage Canadian nursing educators as knowledge transfer champions for enhanced gerontology and geriatrics content in nursing curriculum within their universities, provincially, and nationally.

The Insitute was modelled on the highly successful U.S. GNEC Faculty Development Institutes. We shared resources from the GNEC and additional Canadian and international resources with attendees and engaged them in planning to use the resources and tools.

The Knowledge Exchange Institute was planned based on the Knowledge in Action[1] process model of knowledge translation and knowledge exchange. This model is summarized in a Canadian Health Services Research Foundation publication and on several websites.
