Topic: Labour and delivery- uncomplicated
Target Population: midwife, medical, and nursing students
Agenda
Introductions (people, place, process)
Review purpose of activity (interprofessional education; learning how to care for a patient with an uncomplicated labour and delivery)
Different roles of the health care providers involved, differences, similarities, overlap, scope of practice
Intrapartum assessment simulation
Care of the labouring patient in active or transition phase of labour
Care of the labouring patient in second stage labour- pushing and delivery
Care of the newborn
Debrief
Practice psychomotor skills
Evaluation
This education day will be based on the principles of Experiential Learning: Learners will have the opportunity to participate in hands on interactive learning, reflective learning, (through guided reflection within the scenario as well as debriefing afterward), observational learning, and learning through application of knowledge. Student should review the pre-learning packet prior to coming and come prepared with questions. Each simulation activity will have different groups of interprofessional students participating while the others observe.
Objectives
By the end of this education session students will:
1. Understand the different roles of health care professionals involved and their scope of practice within the context of an uncomplicated labour and delivery
2. Demonstrate interprofessional communication and collaboration skills and understand the importance of interprofessional collaboration in the provision of safe and effective patient-centred care
3. Demonstrate appropriate assessments, interventions, and support techniques throughout the stages and phases of labour for the client with an uncomplicated labour and delivery
4. Increase proficiency in the psychomotor tasks related to an uncomplicated labour and delivery within their own scope of practice
