MediaWiki is a web-based wiki software used by this wiki server and many other wikis, including some of the largest and most popular ones.[1] Originally developed to serve the needs of Wikipedia encyclopedia, today it has also been deployed by companies for internal knowledge management, and as a content management system.

MediaWiki is written in the PHP programming language, and can uses the MySQL database server but can use PostgreSQL. MediaWiki is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License while its documentation is released under the GFDL and partly in the public domain, making it free software|free and open source software.
