The Canadian Universities Council of CIOs (CUCCIO) (http://www.cuccio-cdpiuc.ca) is forming a Shared Interest Group - Canadian Universities Instructional Technologies Group and looking for University participants.

Title: Canadian Universities Instructional Technologies Group

Type: Shared Interest


Mandate: This group is meant to provide a forum for those with responsibilities in the area of instructional technologies to share information on practices, experiences, and issues arising from use of IT in teaching and learning. The group will bring forward to the CUCCIO board topics that seem relevant for their discussion.

Specific Objectives: • To share information, experiences, knowledge and activities with others with responsibility for instructional technologies at Canadian universities. • To provide a forum to enable members to seek advice from others. • To identify and disclose best practices for instructional technology implementations at Canadian universities. • To seek opportunities for collaboration in instructional technology initiatives in areas of commonality across universities. • Examples of instructional technologies relevant to this group include: o Learning Management Systems (LMS) o Social networking tools as used for education o “Live” collaboration tools such as web conferencing, audio conferencing, and videoconferencing as used for education o Tools and facilities used for education, such as plagiarism detection, response systems (“clickers” or alternatives), library e-reserves o E-classroom facilities and services (design, facilities, lecture capture, etc.) o Media resources (such as films, documentaries, image banks) and their licensing and online storage and delivery o Policies, practices, and responsibilities for course content and student data Chair(s) TBD

Membership: Instructional technology managers and those who perform that function in any Canadian university.

Meetings: Communication will be primarily through email to an associated mailing list, through collaboration facilities such as wikis, and by conference calls held as necessary or desired.

Face to face meetings can be set as required, preferably around relevant conferences such as Educause and CanHEIT.

Milestones: First discussion to happen October 2010? In first few months, collect information on systems and tools used, structure of support and governance for instructional technologies, key issues on the horizon. Group’s initial findings and priorities to be presented to CUCCIO for Fall report.
