Lakehead University Instructional Development Centre Updated by Moira McPherson

SUCCESSES

· The Instructional Development Centre, in conjunction with the Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning, is pleased to announce the 4th annual symposium: Teaching as Activism featuring keynote address Teaching as if the World Mattered by Dr. Leesa Fawcett from York University.

· Strong interest in both the Graduate Student Teaching Practicum and the Faculty Workshops.

· Partnering with the Vice-Provost of Aboriginal Initiatives to develop a series of IDC workshops to support instruction incorporating aboriginal content.

· Senate recently recognized six winners of the Lakehead University Contributions to Teaching Awards.

· Upcoming presentation by the winner 2008 Distinguished Instructor Award, Dr. Syed Islam Serajul from the Department of Political Science.

CHALLENGES

· Dr. Gillian Siddall has stepped down as Director of the IDC in order to take the position of Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Dr. Siddall established the IDC at Lakehead University in 2005 and as a result of her knowledge and vision, the IDC has become an integral part of the university’s commitment to teaching excellence and to being a student-centred institution. Her knowledge and commitment to the Centre will be sorely missed! (On a positive note, Dr. Siddall continues to be invovled in collaborative research projects in educational devlopment).

· The position of the Director is currently unfilled and we are operating the Centre with a part-time coordinator.

· Fiscal challenges as we plan for next phase of the IDC.

DIRECTIONS FOR 2009-2010

· The 2010 Strategic Plan has just been approved and Academic Planning will be under way early in the 2010 year. Work will focus on establishing a new vision for Teaching and Learning and the IDC.

· Continue to guide the University on working with UDLES and learner outcomes with a view to the transition to the Quality Assurance Framework.
