  • Karen Maki, research
  • Richard, re: COU Doc

[edit] Ken Hudson, Loyalist Second Life

Ken's Presentation

[edit] Paradigm shifts

  • the future can change quickly
    • e.g. the vision of the 1950s home computer and now Google Lively
  • open SIM project, host SL locally (IBM)
  • can perhaps communicate across platforms- ubiquitous & open

[edit] MUVE

    • 3d, 3rd person graphics
  • accessed over the Internet
  • simultaneous users
  • 5000 educators in SL
  • incredible leap in usership from Jan. 2006 (250,000) to March 2007 (10MILLION) users
    • educational community took notice to possibilities of SL
    • compelling, engaging, interactive, immersive

[edit] Desktop Virtual Worlds Revolution

[edit] The Skeptic

  • what's the point of this??
  • e.g. Get a First Life

[edit] The Believer

  • went to Harvard and bumped into Law students, doing a project, needed some art
  • Harvard Law CyberOne
  • included students, extension students, community
  • students didn't get a different version b.c. of the technology

[edit] The Evangelist

  • founder of Canadian educators in SL
  • senior fellow Beale institute, at OCAD
  • focus on social media and virtual worlds

[edit] Loyalist

  • in Belleville
  • disruptive change- add SL, uptake increased in LMS (from 13-50%)
  • first Canadian campus in 2006

[edit] Education Virtual Worlds

  • expand classroom
  • enhance experience
  • augment materials
  • accelerate learning
  • Virtual worlds extend campus
    • bringing your "brand" into SL

[edit] Clients

[edit] Queens University Faculty of Education

  • to start in fall 2008

[edit] Kelly School of Business, Indiana University

  • september launch,
  • bringing in guest speakers and partners

[edit] SL and ed

[edit] Symposia, conferences, research

[edit] metaverse U- Standford University Conference

  • streaming live video with SL facilitator
  • not just watching a video, interacting with participants
  • secondary discussion can go on without interrupting presenter

[edit] SL Best Practices in Education in-world Conference

http://slbestpractices2007.wikispaces.com/

[edit] Marketing and recruitment

[edit] Case Western Reserve University

  • make sure people are at your campus ready to greet people

[edit] Learn about studying in Canada (Loyalist)

  • 80 qualified contacts- 1 registered

[edit] Collaboration and Community Building

[edit] US State Department / Polish Student Event

  • trained students to prepare

[edit] OSMOSA Gallery- Brown U, Loyalist and the SL Community

  • open source art project
  • can change the face of the building, anyone could participate

[edit] Leadership Exercise

  • child & Youth Workers (Loyalist)

[edit] Immersive Learning Experience

[edit] Port of Entry Process

  • previous used role play (dress up); less real than just discussing
  • designed an experience to practice interview skills
  • Canadian Border Thousand Island crossing
  • 4 hours training (move, talk, interact)
  • 12 hours simulation
  • Simulation run in a computer lab
  • participate as an interviewer and were able to watch all crossings
    • generated 8 mins of discussion, compared to usual resistance to engage
  • identification process
  • vehicle details, immigration holds, smuggling holds,
  • travel documents (passport)
  • secondary search, "pull over to the side"
  • cars were all searchable
  • traveler team was kept separate
  • difficulty and realism
  • video of simulation in SL
  • interview students before and after
  • BEFORE: "we don't want to do it, don't see the value"...just try it
  • AFTER: everyone liked it, "more realistic", "as close as it could be to real life", "learned from classmates, "
  • rolling out the simulation to help training at CBSA
  • grade comparison between 2007 (58%) to 2008 (86%)
  • will track longitudinal progress through CBSA

[edit] Digital Virtual World Natives

  • educators and students create the future of education together

[edit] Recommendations

  • Join the SLED List
  • Identify your planning, development & admin team
  • identify your budget (1 island; $5,000/yr; $3,000 subsequent years)
  • identify 2-3 early adopter type faculty
    • went from 20students first year; up to 250 students second year
    • do ID first year, train second year
  • evaluate internal skills available
  • focus lesson plan for doable outcomes
    • "improving skill level for students"
  • virtual world behaviour guidelines (code of conduct)
    • what are your expectations?
    • representative of your institution

kenhudson(AT)infinitespaces(DOT)CA

Kenny Hubble - SL

  • adopt a commons attitude to the SL environment

[edit] Questions

  • Aldo:How much experience do K-12 have with virtual worlds?
    • don't do this because they will be coming to university in 5 years, do it to enhance learning of students TODAY.
  • Jane:How do you build the buildings?
    • new media consultant and artist, teach animation, looking for p/t work, launched business- budgetary model to train and hire students. Costs were done bit by bit, little at a time. Estimated costs can be given.
  • Jane:How to keep people under 18 out of SL?
    • Part of Harvard project. Moving to age verification. Teen SL is much more rigorous. The young people can spot adults right away. Report, self policing, good governance. Under 17 students, only have access in classroom.
  • Linda:"Think about SL for what is now". White papers on future of technology in 5-10 years down the road. How do we plan for things, with all these time consuming projects if the paradigm will switch.
    • You're right, we can't. Virtual world simulations will be around for a while, it may be Google Lively or MS platform. Hopefully, they will all interact. Establish good learning principles will be valid.
  • Does the Open Sim project, afford portability of investment into SL?
    • security issues, connectivity, host locally,
      • does rendering server side
      • Ray Kurzwell, Human Genome Project- first 5 years 3%, 10 years 27%, it all happened in the last 2 years.
  • Karen: Research in SL? Ethical concerns?
    • Lots of research...so much, difficult to scratch surface. SLED research best resource. Go for it, with a good reason.
  • Any other examples of simulations not based in physical reality
    • Schizophrenia display. Created a building that simulated what it felt like to have hallucinations. Border services is incredibly practical training. Lots of science education simulation. Anatomy education like "Fantastic Voyage".
  • Andrew: Do you build models outside? Sketch up.
    • Does not work like that yet. Studio Max, Soft Image. In-house tools only; there is a way- called Blender. In the end, it's the texturing is what makes it real. Possible on small scale. Sketches are done in 3D studio Max, used for mock up for client.
  • Richard: Have you heard the concern regarding replicating this world with identical world. Virtual world frees us from this world.
    • People want to feel like they "get it". It's already a big leap to get into the virutal world and feel comfortable. Created a metaphor for the whole region. Created a balance. Did something similar for Queen's. They wanted their building (identical). Wanted the students to feel like they were "coming to campus". Feels artificial to not have shadow and light. Goes back to institutional goals. Can go to exact replica real buildings or totally imagined spaces.
  • Karen: For those of who are not artists, what are the benefits?
    • people enjoy architecture but don't necessarily design, i.e. "build a shelter", no aesthetic criteria for grading.
    • 5% of people on e-bay, the rest buy- most are enjoying themselves, the rest are content providers
  • Scott: What are other learning activities are not just simulations?
    • leadership activities. Journalism skills (rudimentary reporting). Nutrition game, cumulative choices. hands-on rafting adventures. Sarah (intelligirl) Rhetoric and composition could show different modes of expression. Has over 3000 people apply to get in her class. Just another option. Another element to the educators tool kit.
  • If it's a first time use for students, what type of investment in orientation before you can actually do something
    • 4-15 hours. Only teach the students what they need to know to finish the learning. Get them to take a picture and email. E.g. "go find the schoolbus and take a picture". A lot of stuff that is peripheral.
