Dead Ringers (1988) Dir. David Cronenberg
Dead Ringers is the story of twin gynaecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle, whose practice becomes threatened by Beverly's increasing drug problem and insecurities, which eventually come to affect both twins' lives. The film was a slight departure from Cronenberg's film work up to that point, as it did not contain explicit gore and violence, but showed a more subtle, if not subdued, depiction of the abject and the grotesque. Dead Ringers is notable for its focus on the medical institution and its technologies as being driven by profit and the desire to control the body.
