A female buddy film is similar to the buddy film except that the main characters feature females, and it is centered around their situation. The cast may be mainly female depending on the plot. "The female buddy film is a recent trend in mainstream cinema. However, Thelma and Louise had a similar popular impact as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the early ‘90s, paving the way for onscreen female friendships like the one between Evelyn Couch and Ninny Threadgoode in Fried Green Tomatoes, Waiting to Exhale and Walking and Talking."[1]

[edit] Definition

Dictionary.com describes a "buddy film" as "a genre of film dealing with the relationship and adventures of two [or more] friends".[2]

Female Buddy Films may also be refered to as Female Friendship Films. They follow the story of two or more female friends on their journey through life or through specifc problems and situations. These films became the most popular in the 1960's and drew from both the emergence of the "New Woman's Film" and the "(male) buddy film" genres. [3]

"Examining the female friendship film since the 1970s and setting it against older films of the 1930s and 1940s, such as Mildred Pierce and Stella Dallas, Karen Hollinger studies the character of the films themselves and how they speak to female viewers. She argues that while many of these films initially seem to affirm the power of female friendship and reject traditional images of women, most of them ultimately fall back on conventional feminine roles.Hollinger argues that the female friendship film, by attempting to assimilate into the mainstream, uses ideas from the women's movement, like female autonomy and sisterhood, that are particularly susceptible to compromise. It is this blend of empowering and conservative elements that makes the female friendship film neither a true challenge to the status quo nor a mere confirmation of dominant ideology but rather a multifaceted cinematic form that reflects both of these strains."[4]
