[edit] Overview

As an instructor, if you or your department has prepared an online syllabus already, you can direct the Syllabus Tool to link to it. Otherwise, you can enter material directly in your Syllabus tool. As you create a syllabus, you can designate that it be viewable by the general public or just to members of your course.

It is worth noting that many instructors do not add the Syllabus tool and instead upload an existing document as an HTML or PDF file in the Resources tool.

Some features of a traditional syllabus are divided between the Syllabus and Schedule Tools. Some instructors use the Syllabus area to display the department's official online syllabus, and use the Schedule as a detailed resource for students. You have the option to format your syllabus content in HTML instead of plain text.

[edit] Quickly Add An Existing Syllabus

The Sakai 10+ Syllabus tool has a lot of features to help build a syllabus, but sometimes instructors would like to simply add an existing one.

A simple, alternative solution might be to post the existing PDF file in Resources and then optionally link to the file from the Home or a Web Content tool. But this can still be done with the Syllabus tool.

Here's how that can be done in a few steps.

To add a single syllabus item with an existing PDF as an attachment:

  1. Click Syllabus in the menubar.
  2. Click Create/Edit, and then click Add.
  3. Enter a title for your syllabus item, and then enter your content (For example, the course name, or simple Outline").
  4. Under "Attachments", attach a file from your local computer or from Resources, or specify the URL for a file on the web.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Confirm that the bulb to publish the item is illuminated.

Permissions and roles

To complete the procedures in this article, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. This often excludes Students and TAs by default. To determine your role, follow the directions in Participant roles.

For a basic understanding of roles and permissions, see Permissions and roles.
