The Profile tool allows members of the Brock University community to search for people by name or common interests, view their profiles, view their connections, add them as a connection, and much more. You can update your status and have it sent on to your Twitter account. The Profile tool has privacy by design and is it is completely opt-in, requiring interested community members to modify their Profile permissions and to add information before it can be shared.

The Profile tool can safely be ignored by some and enjoyed by others.

Status updates are a good way to let other people know what you are up to or what's on your mind.

[edit] To post a status update

  1. On your Profile page, type something in the status box.
  2. Click Say it to post the update.

  • Click Clear next to your status message.

Status updates will also disappear when they are about a week old.

Status updates can also be sent to your Twitter account, if you have one. You can manage this in your Preferences page.

You can also restrict who can see your status updates in your Privacy page.

  1. Hover your mouse over the image panel and click Change picture.
  2. A new panel will appear underneath.
  3. Depending on your browser you will be able to click Choose file or Browse to open a window to locate an image on your computer.
  4. Select your picture.
  5. Click Upload to upload your image.
  6. The image you choose must be a valid image, ie JPEG, GIF or PNG and must not be larger than the maximum size of 2Mb.

If you have not entered any information into your Profile it will be pre-populated with your first and last name as well as your Brock University E-Mail address.

  1. Hover over any of the information sections and click Edit.
  2. Update your information and click Save changes.

[edit] To manage your privacy settings

  1. Adjust the settings for each item by selection one of these three options:
    1. Everyone refers to all Brock University community members that have access to Isaak/Sakai.
    2. My Connections refers to Brock University community members that have connections with. These are individuals that have requested to be one of your connections and you have confirmed the connection, or confirmed connections that you have requested.
    3. Only Me Do not share this information, even with my connections. This is not an option for Search or Who can see my status.
  2. Click Save settings when you are finished.

[edit] Individual Settings

  • Profile Image: Choose who can see your profile picture. Choosing Everyone will include your picture in your Forums posts for others to see.
  • Basic Info: Choose who can see your basic information like nickname and birthday.
  • Contact Info: Choose who can see things like your email addresses and phone numbers.
    Your Brock University E-Mail address is added by default.
  • Academic Info: Choose who can see your academic information like school, department or course.
  • Personal Info: Choose who can see your favorite books and tv shows etc.
  • Show Birth Year: Choose whether or not to show or hide your birth year. Ticked means visible.
  • Search: Choose who can find you in searches.
    Your first and last name is added by default.
  • Who can view my connections: Choose who can view your list of connections.
  • Who can see my status: Choose who can see your status updates, this does not limit any access to Twitter if you have chosen to add it to your Profile

These settings take effect immediately.

[edit] Searching for people

You can search for people by name, email or common interest and even add them as a connection if you like.

To search for people by name or email

  1. On the Search page, type their name, email or part thereof, into the person's name or email search box.
  2. Click Search by name or email to find people that match your search parameters

The list of results will be returned underneath the search box. If your search returns too many results, you'll be prompted to refine your search.

When you search, you might have the option to Add them as a connection or View their connections. See below more for information on these actions.

Note: Depending on each person's individual privacy settings, what you see in the search results may be restricted. You too can control who can find you in searches and what other people see of your own profile in your Privacy settings.

[edit] Connections

In the Profile tool you can search for people, view their profiles and add them as connections. They will then show up in your connections matrix on your Profile page, and in your Connections list.

[edit] Adding someone as a connection

When you are viewing someone else's profile, you might have the option to Add them as a connection. If so, click this link to open the confirmation window, then click Add connection. Depending on their settings, they will receive an email notification, and be prompted to confirm your connection request.

[edit] Accepting or ignoring a connection request

If someone else adds you as a connection, you must first confirm or ignore that request before you are both connected.

On the Connections page, click the green tick Image:accept.png to accept or the red cross Image:cancel.png to ignore that friend request.

[edit] Managing your connections

Note: Email confirmations are sent whenever you add someone as a connection or accept a connection request, but are never sent when you ignore a connection request or remove a connection.

On the Connections page you can remove connections by clicking the red cross Image:cross.png.


You can configure what emails are sent in your Preferences page.

On your preferences page you can control what emails are sent you when various actions occur, as well as manage the Twitter integration for your status updates.

  1. Click the radio buttons to adjust the settings on or off for each preference.

  1. Click the checkbox to enable the Twitter integration.
  2. Add your Twitter username and password.

You can also disable the twitter integration by unchecking the checkbox. Your details will be removed automatically.

When you are finished, click Save settings. If you enabled the Twitter integration, your details will be verified with Twitter so you must be connected to the Internet at this point.
