Permissions and roles

To complete the procedures in this article, you must be assigned a role having the necessary permissions. This often excludes Students and TAs by default. To determine your role, follow the directions in Participant roles.

For a basic understanding of roles and permissions, see Permissions and roles.

Remember an Isaak/Sakai course site will be automatically populated with an updated student enrolment list each day around 6AM. Adding new Participants will typically only be needed to add other Instructors and Teaching Assistants.

You can add an other instructor, teaching assistant, or additional students by following these steps:

  • Go to the "Site Info" item on the left menu
  • Find and click "Add Participants" at the top
  • Enter the individual's CAMPUS ID (or a list of CAMPIS IDs) and press "Continue"
  • Check off the appropriate role
    • Audit - Non-student, will not receive a grade.[1]
    • Instructor - Can read, revise, delete and add both content and participants to a site.
    • Liaison Librarian - Limited role which can be upgraded as needed.[1]
    • Organizer - Allows for differentiation from the TA or Instructor role[1]
    • Student - Can read content, and add content to a site where appropriate.
    • Teaching Assistant - Can read, add, and revise most content in their sections.
  • Press "Continue"and press "Continue"
  • Choose if you want to notify the person you're adding by E-Mail and press "Continue"

[edit] Determining your role

  • In the course if you select "Site Info"...
    • if you see a list of participants then you are enrolled as an "Instructor"
    • and do not see a list of participants then you are enrolled as a "Student" or "Teaching Assistant"

[edit] Possible Issues

  1. An individual's E-Mail address might not match with their username, and with new accounts or individuals with last names longer the 7 characters it is in fact unlikely. The best method for determining an individuals Sakai username is to ask that individual what "Login" they use to log into https://my.brocku.ca
  2. Instructors, TAs etc will need to have a Brock University computer account - Applications can be obtained from ITS and require the signature of the the chair and/or dean but not the individual who will use the account.
  3. Sakai uses https://my.brocku.ca accounts. Individuals must activate their https://my.brocku.ca before it will work with Sakai.
  4. Once accounts are activated in https://my.brocku.ca portal they are not immediately added to Sakai but manually added as needed.
