Dates: August 1-3, 2012

Location: UOIT North Campus 2000 Simcoe St N[2]

Registration: The cost of attendance at the OUCEL Summer Institute 2012 is $200.00 per person - this includes attendance at the full event and supper on the evening of the second day. To register, please download and fill out a registration form [3]. Mail the completed form and a cheque payable to UOIT to the address indicated on the form.

Accommodations: We encourage everyone to stay on campus at our residence! We have secured a group rate, and will be posting details about how to book accommodations very soon. More more information about the residences at UOIT, visit their website: [4]

Day 1: August 1, 1pm - 4pm

12-1pm: Lunch and registration; Welcome from Richard Marceau

1-1:30pm: Welcome from Bill Muirhead, Associate Provost, Academic and IT (TBC)

Bill will be connecting with us via Adobe Connect from beautiful Victoria BC to welcome delegates to this year’s summer institute.

1:30-2:30pm: “Lightning round” institutional updates

As a warmup and icebreaker activity, participants will share a short institutional update - focusing on one triumph and one challenge over the past year.

2:30-4pm: BVirtual Remote Proctor Demo

Rick Beaudry will join us for a demonstration of the BVirtual Live Online Proctoring service. From the BVirtual website: “B Virtual provides a seamless remote proctoring experience for students to take exams online. Our combination of people, process and technology provide a level of integrity to the examination process that raises the bar for Proctored exams.”

Day 2: August 2, 9am - 4pm

9:00-9:30: Breakfast and good mornings

9:30-10:30: AODA Roundtable: Accessible media strategies

In this roundtable discussion, we would like to focus specifically on how institutions across the province are approaching the development, conversion and administration of accessible media, including videos (closed captioning and described video), websites, online course material and other resources.

10:30-12: Leveraging technology for strategic planning and development

This hands-on workshop will begin with a mini-panel with Laurie Harrison, Giulia Forsythe and Jaymie Koroluk, who will share their experiences with leveraging technology in several key areas (blended learning, social media and synchronous communication technology). Participants will then work in groups to brainstorm and develop ideas around several key questions: 1) What are the institutional priorities we need to align with? 2) What are our key faculty development goals and strategies? 3) How can we leverage technology to implement strategies and meet our goals?

12-1: Lunch

1-2:30: Terry Anderson on the “MOOC Phenomenon” (via Adobe Connect)

Dr. Terry Anderson, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Distance Education at Athabasca University will be joining us via Adobe Connect for a lively discussion about the recent MOOC phenomenon. Terry will talk with us about the notion of “unbundling” the University, and the threats and opportunities presented by MOOCs.

2:30-4: Beyond the LMS: The new learning ecosystem

An extension on last year’s “Cloud and 2.0” discussion, this session will explore themes related to the new learning “ecosystem”. Themes explored will include Personal Learning Environments (PLEs); operating beyond the LMS; third-party tools and resources; and cloud computing.

Themes: Defining Blended Learning Administrative Challenges Sustainability Issues Blended Learning and Larger Cultural Context

11am-12pm: Showcase of Ontario University Initiatives
