Lakehead University *E-learning Activities
LMS
- One LMS used campus-wide for online and F2F courses (WebCT CE 4.1)
– License expires Aug. 31, 2009 – will begin exploring other options over the next 12 months (would be interested in collaborating with other institutions on this initiative)
Mediastreaming & Videoconferencing
- approximately 10 courses are offered per academic year via live streaming
- 10-12 courses delivered per academic year through video between Orillia and Thunder Bay campuses
- elearning workshops and orientations, study skills and exam prep sessions streamed throughout the year (the latter hosted by Learning Assistance Centre)
New Initiatives for upcoming year:
- blogs and wikis – downloaded MediaWiki and Wordpress on local servers. Currently working out LDAP issues. Creating user policies with regard to these technologies.
Challenges:
- Current LMS is dated and does not integrate well with new technologies (and browsers).
- keeping pace with Web 2.0 technologies and limited research about their effectiveness for teaching and learning
