Sandy Hughes, Director: TSS | Jeanette McDonald, Manager: Educational Development
Developments in 2009-2010

•	In fall 2009 we initiated our first learning community on student writing; this follows our 2008 conference at which John Bean presented and gave a workshop; the theme of the conference was “writing within and across the disciplines”; the response has been overwhelmingly positive

•	We are currently undergoing a major LMS review; this began with a call for proposal process which eventually saw two systems under consideration – Desire2Learn and Blackboard; shortly a decision will be made as to which system will be adopted; currently we use WebCT/Blackboard

•	ED is playing an active role in advancing and supporting the integration of the OCAV undergraduate degree level expectations; currently we are working at the program level as each area comes up for review; we are also working with various programs (who approach us) who are reworking their curriculum and are making strides to integrate program level learning objectives

•	We are undergoing an educational policy review process to assess what policies are currently in place (if any) and what kinds of educational policies are needed (a gap analysis of sorts); for example: defining how a course is defined under a blended model – currently most undergraduate courses are defined by 36 contact hours; a policy requiring our best and most experienced professors to teach first year courses (engagement); information communication technology – e.g., faculty who embrace cloud computing and implications such as privacy

•	Syllabus Research Project – moving to phase II – for more information see www.nutshell.wikispaces.com

•	Budget cut implications – charging for programs/events; loss of faculty associate position; cut backs to grant program, etc.

•	Blended/Integrated/Intensive teaching – there is considerable interest from our graduate professional programs (MBA, seminary, social work) to offer programs and courses in alternate formats; in response we are doing intensive, customized programming for programs and departments (all invited)

•	Laurier is undergoing an information and communications technology review , see: http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=317&p=15010

•	TSS has a new reporting structure; formerly we reported to the Vice President Academic and Provost; we now report to the Associate VP: Academic Services

•	TSS is investigating a streaming server for delivery of online learning mediated materials (e.g., films, audio) to replace DVD, CD, and yes, VHS; not all distributors seem to be up-to-speed on this though it is generating discussion for them

•	Laurier’s president has set up an innovation fund to provide seed money to explore initiatives that either (1) result in cost savings to the university or (2) make money for the university; in either case the idea is that the department (for example) to propose and carry out a project would also benefit financially from their efforts; this fund has potential implications for continuing education, online learning, and educational development)

•	We are experimenting with offering webinar workshops followed by a discussion forum with moderate success

E-Learning at Wilfrid Laurier University
August 12, 2008

LMS

It has been a difficult year with WebCT as we’ve experienced numerous problems (some associated with file space). We have now moved to a multi-node license, additional servers and increased support and the system seems to be functioning better. The difficulties have led however, to the recognition of the need for a full LMS review, which we will begin in fall 2008.

We have also spent almost the past year working with SCT on our SIS/WebCT linkage project (Luminis). We are planning to launch the new system for fall term 2008, which will allow immediate downloading of registration information into the LMS and will also allow for on-line grade submission.

Clickers

It has now been two years since we adopted one clicker system at Laurier (iclicker) and we have been very satisfied with the performance of the system. The use of clickers to support classroom teaching continues to increase.

Webcasting

We have adopted Horizon Wimba for our webcasting needs and this technology is now being incorporated into an increasing number of courses and projects at Laurier. It is anticipated that webcasts will soon be used to support or replace practicum visits for our Faculty of Social Work. We also use webcasts for research purposes, and in our online courses. It will need to be determined whether there is available budget to continue to support this technology for the future, but hopefully this will be the case as its use is increasing.

Online Learning

We have recently changed the name of our distance education ‘operation’ from the Distance Education Department to the Centre for Online Learning. Registration in online courses continues to grow (apx. 22 per cent last year) and the majority of students taking the courses are now full-time on-campus students. We believe the new name better reflects the nature of the program.

Other Technologies

We continue to experiment with Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis and podcasts, although these technologies have not been adopted in any systematic way at this time.

Mclare:

The University of Windsor's 2009 COED Update

2009 was an exciting year for the Centre for Teaching and Learning, as we continued to explore new ways of facilitating the development of the University of Windsor into a learning-centred university. Here are some highlights . . .

'''1) Accreditation and Piloting of the University Teaching Certificate (UTC) Program'''

After a flurry of research, collaboration, drafting, re-drafting, discussion, debate, strategizing, a lot of writing, and some mentoring from across the pond, the CTL completed plans for a three-level certificate program for faculty, sessional instructors, graduate students, and staff. The first two certificates of the UTC were submitted to the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) for accreditation/recognition in the late spring, and both were officially recognized early in the fall. The first certificate, ''Fundamentals of University Teaching'' (containing two graduate credit courses, a six-week practical course, and completion of a learning plan and summative dossier with help from mentors), was piloted in September. Nine people are currently acting as our guinea pigs, with several more on the waiting list to start as a second cohort in January.

With the UTC, the University of Windsor became the first university in all of North America to have a SEDA-recognized certificate program. Next steps: full roll-out of the first certificate for 2010-11, piloting the second certificate (''Theory and Practice of Scholarly Teaching''), sending the third certificate (''Leadership in University Teaching'') to SEDA for recognition, and turning all three certificates into provincially-recognized graduate diplomas as well as SEDA-recognized certificate programs.

'''2) The Celebration of Teaching Excellence'''

In its third year the CTE attracted more than 200 attendees. In addition to honouring the winners of local, provincial and national teaching awards, this year's CTE featured a poster display showcasing SoTL projects funded by our centred on Learning Innovation Fund (CLIF) grants.

'''3) An Expanding Program for Graduate Assistants and Teaching Assistants'''

Our program for GAs and TAs continued to expand. In 2009-10 it included two introductory professional development events (GATAcademies), classroom observations, learning communities, graduate credit courses, 6-week half-courses, Instructional Skills Workshops (ISWs) and GATA teaching awards (including awards for educational leadership).

'''4) The Learning Technology Trainer'''

The CTL added a new position to its Teaching and Learning Development team: the Learning Technology Trainer. The trainer, Lorie Stolarchuk, is focused on encouraging the development of learning-centred approaches to the use of pedagogical technologies, both in the classroom and online (using the LMS and other online education tools).

'''5) Collaboration and Networking'''

In 2009-10 the CTL welcomed several new Visiting Fellows in Educational Development: Kathryn Sutherland, Stephen Bostock, Mark Schofield, Dorothy Spiller and Gordon Joughin. These visiting fellows not only help the CTL staff learn and explore new ideas, they are also having an impact on the university culture. Administration has come to realize now that educational development is not a foul plot cooked up locally in Windsor, but rather an international profession and even, perhaps, a movement. Nonetheless, CTL staff mostly appreciate the visiting fellows for their insight, advice, collaborations, and good company.

In addition, we continue to collaborate with colleagues at neighbouring universities in the United States. In May we held our third annual international teaching and learning conference with Oakland University. And this year we joined the SoTL Academy, composed of universities primarily based in Michigan and Wisconsin, which held its first conference in June.

'''6) Expanded Offerings'''

Finally, the CTL continues to expand its more traditional educational development initiatives, such as themed workshops series (particularly a well-attended summer series and a new fall break, called UWin Week), departmental curriculum retreats, a Facilitator`s Development Workshop that will enable us to offer more ISWs per year, and a very well-received week-long Teaching Dossier Academy.
'''New Developments & Highlights'''
'''1.	Explosive growth'''
Over the last year or so, the Centre for Teaching and Learning has experienced rapid, awe-inspiring growth. The Teaching and Learning Development team, directed by Erika Kustra (who joined us in August 2008 from McMaster University), now includes six staff (four full-ime and two part-time) plus a rotating roster of Visiting Fellows in Educational Development. The Teaching and Learning Technologies team, directed by Jeanne Drouillard, now includes 18 staff divided into an Educational Technologies unit and a Media Productions unit. We operate under the auspices of the Office of the Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning (Alan Wright), whose staff also supports many aspects of the CTL’s work. As the Centre grows, programs and services have increased comcomitantly. Between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008, just to cite one example, we offered 35% more workshops with an overall increase in attendance of 46%.

'''2.	STLHE 2008: A World of Learning'''
In June, the CTL hosted the 2008 STLHE conference, called “A World of Learning”. The conference was a tremendous success, and provided the newly expanded CTL teams a chance to work together on a large scale as a sort of “trial by fire”. We approached the conference as an opportunity to build capacity at our own campus through the process of planning the conference and the opportunities it afforded. All involved seemed to have a good time.

'''3.	Centred on Learning Innovation Fund (CLIF)'''
The CLIF grants were launched in 2007 to support projects that advanced the University of Windsor’s mission of learning-centredness. For the first batch of grants, the CTL asked applicants to focus on projects that contributed not only to the advancement of learning-centredness in general, but also to the development, implementation, assessment, and exploration of learning outcomes in particular. Projects could be funded up to $2,500, or up to $5,000 if matched by faculties. In 2007-8, 14 projects were funded. Most of these led to workshops and presentations at STLHE; some led to the creation of educational DVDs, website materials, and even a textbook.

'''4.	GATAcademy'''
Our embryonic GA/TA development program kicked off with the first-ever “GATAcademy”, a one-day workshop event for GAs and TAs in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Faculty and CTL staff led workshops on all manner of topics for over 80 GAs and TAs – a higher turnout than we’d anticipated, given that we were catering to only one faculty and that there is a limited history of GA/TA development here. The GA/TA program is expanding throughout the year, with a learning community, workshops, a mini-course, consultations, classroom observations, web resources, and Dr. Wright’s existing graduate credit course.

'''5.	CLEW'''
The University of Windsor’s new Sakai-based learning management system, CLEW, was launched in 2007-8. As of the fall 2008 term, over 700 CLEW sites had been created. Most users of the previous LMS have transferred their sites over by this point. The CTL and Information Technology Services continue to collaborate on upgrades, training, andtroubleshooting.

'''6.	Teaching and Learning Technologies Spreading Across Campus'''
Aside from the LMS, the CTL also supports the adoption of other teaching and learning technologies. Clickers are now used by a range of courses in Business, Psychology, Biology, Women’s Studies, Nursing, Chemistry, and Engineering. In addition, 464 podcast sessions have been created and uploaded to the central podcast directory. The CTL site hosts more than 400 items for streaming. The CTL’s efforts to make learning spaces more user-friendly, accessible, and flexible has resulted in 50 classrooms featuring permanent multimedia equipment, as of June 2008.

'''7.	Video Production'''
CTL staff were involved in well over a dozen video projects for the University of Windsor community, including: a series of vignettes regarding social justice issues in the classroom, interviews with visiting academics and educational developers (Virginia Lee, Carl Wieman, Neil Fleming), and STLHE conference videos.
AUGUST 2009

'''Triumphs'''

•Successful campus-wide implementation of Sakai replacing our own outdated LMS-based on Lotus Notes; stability in the new environment; and, successful move from 3rd party support to the community version of Sakai

•Introduction of e-grade application integrated with Sakai

•Transfer of a technology trainer position from ITS to Centre for Teaching and
Learning – to better support the integration of pedagogy into the training for LMS and other technology in support of teaching, e.g. clickers, SmartBoards

•Development of a new database for the scheduling and support of videoconferencing across campus

•Installation of two new media servers to support both PC and MAC videos in support of live streaming of convocation and the increased demand for media to be included in course materials

•Increased use of clickers, podcasting

•Workshops for faculty increasingly include technology as part of good teaching practices

'''Challenges'''

•As more technology is installed in classrooms, there is a greater commitment on financial resources to maintain the equipment while faced with reduced budgets

=E-LEARNING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR=

==Podcasting/ Progressive Streaming==

The University of Windsor makes podcasting available for instructors and faculties in support of classroom instruction or recording of special meetings or events. Through either our AV office or our Media Production department material is recorded onto a digital medium. The content is quick edited and posted to the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) media server. The link is provided to the instructor or faculty for distribution. The service is offered for either audio or video. Challenge: Low demand

==Clickers==

The university clicker program is administered through the CTL. Clickers (audience response system) enable instructors to interact with the class with “100%” participation. The system allows for either anonymous or tracked responses. Increased participation has demonstrated that grades improve through their use. We recently renewed the contract with Turning Technologies. Challenge: Student resistance because of cost

==Learning Management System (CLEW – Collaboration and Learning Environment Windsor)==

CLEW is an adaptation of the SAKAI open source system. It reaches almost all our students as the large majority of the instructors use the system to manage their courses. The system encourages high amounts of collaborations among students and instructors. Challenges: Expectations as we transition to this new system

==Media Lab==

The CTL media lab consists of 40 computer workstations and supports teaching by multiple programs across campus, e.g. languages, dramatic arts and computer science. The lab also supports ESL classes, TOEFL testing, and other ancillary programs. Challenge: Aligning with Learning Spaces developments

==Showtime/Camtasia==

Instructors can make video lectures using either one of these programs. Showtime, a CTL developed program, lets the user record an audio track and link it to their Powerpoint presentation. Camtasia captures the screen as a video and the instructor records their lecture to accompany the visuals. Challenge: Promotion and training

==Videoconferencing==

The university has several locations with videoconference capabilities, including five classrooms, two CTL rooms and three boardrooms and two portable units. These facilities are used for classes and other purposes, e.g. Math class in partnership with Oakland University in Michigan, faculty recruitment, thesis defense, seminars and meetings as well as the Sharcnet Research Network. Challenge: Resources to support the various locations and the complexity of troubleshooting technical problems

==Virtual Anatomy Lab and other technical installations in the Medical Education Building==

The Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario is opening the Windsor program in a new building in September 2008. The Windsor program will rely heavily on technology for instruction since most of the instructors will be located in London and the students will be in Windsor. This means highly specialized technical equipment in classrooms, learning suites and labs which will provide the medical profession students (doctors and nurses) access to anatomy learning without the constraints of physical location. Challenge: New technologies for Windsor that we will require support

'''Teaching Support Centre, The University of Western Ontario

Highlights for COED Meeting – November 2008'''

'''New Faculty Associates'''

* We are delighted to welcome two new Faculty Associates, Madeline Lennon (Coordinator of the Faculty Mentor Program) and Allen Pearson (Faculty Associate for the promotion of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning).

'''Western Purple Guides'''

* This year has seen the successful launch of our guide on "Graduate Supervision", [http://www.uwo.ca/tsc/purpleguides.html] a handbook on the mentorship and supervision of graduate students by Betsy Skarakis-Doyle (Faculty Associate, Graduate Supervision) and Gayle McIntyre (Research Assistant). This publication was distributed to all faculty on campus.

* We now have a preliminary draft of our purple guide on Curriculum Review by Margaret McNay, Faculty Associate, and an expert in the field from the Faculty of Education. The curriculum guide will be particularly useful as we continue our work to have faculty members include learning outcomes in their course outlines. We want to assist departments with the review of their undergraduate curriculum to ensure that the Undergraduate Degree level Expectations are addressed in their departmental review.

* Nanda Dimitrov, Associate Director, wrote a preliminary draft of the Western Guide to Mentoring International Graduate Students, which should be ready to be distributed by January of 2009.

'''TA Training Program'''

* Jennifer Boman completed a detailed quantitative study of our 10-year-old TA Training Program for her Psychology PhD dissertation. Her results concluded that the program has significant impact on TA competence (such as significant changes in self-efficacy, knowledge, communication apprehension and actual teaching behaviors).

* The centre developed a 20-hour, intensive Advanced Teaching Practice program to enhance the teaching skills of graduate students who are already experienced teachers.

'''Graduate Student Professional Development Initiative''' - The 360° Graduate Student Professional Development Initiative is now in its third year of development. Program highlights include:

* The 360° Initiative website [http://grad.uwo.ca/360/] was launched to serve as a gateway to all campus-wide professional development programs and to provide links to information on grant writing, teaching, career development, and strategies for academic success.

* New international graduate student programs were developed on the Language of Teaching in Engineering/the Language of Teaching in the Sciences, along with workshops on graduate supervision and on academic job search strategies for international graduate students.

* The Academic and Professional Communication Program was developed to help enhance graduate students' ability to present their research at academic conferences and job interviews.

'''Scholarship on Teaching and Learning'''

* The Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning will be launched this winter as a collaborative project between Western and STLHE. Four Western staff and faculty sit on the editorial team and Western Libraries is providing the platform called the Digital Commons, which will be used to mount this electronic journal.

* SoTL was supported this year at Western through the distribution of 6 peer reviewed research grants provided by the TSC. Our two-year piloting of small ($500 to $2,500) research on teaching grants demonstrated that when funds are available faculty will start to explore those issues that are essential to student academic success.

'''Goals for Upcoming Year'''

* We are piloting the "Instructional Skills Workshop for Faculty". Two of the centre's staff have received training in this workshop method.

* SoTL learning communities will be established for assisting faculty who wish to be involved in this form of scholarship. Separate sessions will be held with our librarian faculty to assist them with their scholarship.

* Enhancements are being planned to the Faculty Mentor Program to ensure the retention of under represented groups such as women and people of colour.

* The next stage of the 360°Graduate Student Professional Development initiative will be implemented including programs on Women in Academe, Academic and Professional Communication, and Innovation in Graduate Education.

* Natasha Patrito, our new educational developer (in Science and Engineering) will work with Tom Haffie (Faculty Associate) to lead an appreciative inquiry project on teaching innovation within the Faculty of Science.

*DS no longer offers course in any other mode. We develop / redevelop about 20 courses per year with budget constraints limiting this number. The demand is growing, from instructors and department, for more; however, dollars and staff resources are limits.

*The ITRC ( Instructional Technology Resource Centre) has created short manualettes of the key tools in our LMS [http://www.uwo.ca/its/itrc/resources.html] and instructional videos [http://webct.uwo.ca/videos/instructionalVideos.html] Check them out. I think they are very good, and perhaps you might do something similar at your institution.

*We have a Wimba service that is accessed through Webct so we can construct course instructional material that is truly synchronous. This service was originally setup, in part, to assist with the satellite campus of Schulich School of Medicine at the University of Windsor.

*I think the biggest challenge will be related to finding the needed resources ($) to grow e-learning across campus. As Bill Muirhead has suggested this problem can also focus on many of the benefits the e-learning can provide in these financially difficult times.

== '''Challenges in Supporting Blended and Online Learning (DE)''' ==

1.	Providing institutional support for instructional technology use for a diverse group of users, i.e., more faculty want to do podcasting, want to create their own online content, but we don't have real hands-on support for newer technologies (not just the cutting edge ones, but the accepted newer ones, like Adobe Presenter, Camtasia).

2.	Expertise in education technology that is spread out between at least three groups at UW. We do good job of supporting each other and communicating, but in a big institution knowing who to talk to and who can provide support, can be problematic for the faculty.

3.	Keeping up with the changing technology needs and interest of the students and gauging what technologies they really want to have integrated into their academic lives. Also, predicting which technologies are going to be key to graduates in their future careers and how to integrate them into their programs. What’s available externally (e.g., Gmail, Facebook) is also outpacing technology we can provide and support internally.

4.	Keeping up with growth in the number of DE and blended courses. Encouraging quality while supporting a larger number of faculty on an ongoing basis.

5.	Redefining DE: most students (80%) taking online courses are regular undergrads; dispelling old conceptions about DE courses such as the “correspondence” model, or as only targeting mature or distance learners.

6.	Providing appropriate compensation/incentives to faculty for developing and delivering online and blended courses.

7.	Intellectual Property and Copyright: disincentives for faculty; concerns for administration, headaches for support staff.

8.	Working with an LMS that meets most of the campus needs, but not all. By definition, an LMS is a closed system, so integration, both with other campus systems and new technologies or tools, can be challenging.

1.	Good communication and collaboration among our units, offsets 2. Joint committees and groups for LMS (ACEOPS), Learning Technology (ITAC, Net-Savvy, Seminars in Learning Innovation and Pedagogy), etc. Strong central support for the LMS and technical infrastructure frees the teaching-related units to focus on support and development.

2.	Increased awareness of the teaching support units over the last 5 years or so, and higher profiles for exemplary teachers on campus through the Teaching Excellence Council. CTE liaison model puts front line support in the faculties.

3.	Teaching Excellence Academy brings together a group of faculty (10-15) for four days who wish to redesign their courses. This will be expanded in the new year to encompass blended and online learning.

4.	Solid and appreciated support mechanism for faculty who want to use UW-ACE, both pedagogical and technical through CTE, IST, and Distance Ed.

5.	Growth in number of courses and usage of LMS for meaningful learning activities. Some success in analysing use/researching impact.

6.	Central Funding: Learning Innovation Fund provides up to $20,000 for research; Program Innovation Funds for program development.).

7.	Senior Administration Task Force on online learning, making several significant recommendations regarding University’s commitment to online learning, including faculty compensation.

'''Linda Murphy-Boyer
University of Toronto

'''Challenges'''''
'''

'''Reviews reviews reviews'''...'''

*Discussion of an RCAT review has been under way for two years now. For that same amount of time, out of a staff of ten people (myself included) I’ve filled two very critical positions with casual staff. Hiring appointed staff to fill those positions will be dependent on the implementation of the review. Furthermore, I just received news that two additional positions will need to be filled in a few weeks. All four positions are on hold until the reorganization is better understood - with September rolling in very quickly. Many other departments that we collaborate with are also under review, making decisions and planning difficult. Our new faculty orientation, planned focus groups, hiring and all of our fall programming is on hold.

'''Implementing a Podcasting tool/streaming server'''

*Try as we might we just can’t seem to get a podcast tool or even a functioning central streaming server in place. I have been in discussion with a number of groups to review the use of home-grown products, i-tunes, and/or a workflow for our new (8 months old) streaming server that no one knows how to access. Still no results. Politics and lack of will/ownership stymie us.

'''Moving beyond a Blackboard implementation state to model the pedagogical use of Blackboard'''.

*Even though we offer a number of advanced (pedagogically focused) courses in the use of BlackBoard, they are less well attended than our introductory (basic) courses. Although we have almost complete saturation with the use of the Blackboard system, the majority of faculty use the system for delivering one dimensional course materials like syllabi and PowerPoint slides. It is a small comfort to know that we are not alone in trying to encourage our faculty to experiment with Blackboard’s more interactive features. In summer 2008, the Educause community undertook the task of identifying the top five challenges in teaching and learning with technology by conducting focus groups and sending out a community survey. Number four on that list was encouraging faculty in the adoption and innovation of teaching and learning with IT. We continue to revamp our workshop offerings this summer and search for “star” instructors who will speak to other instructors about their use of BlackBoard. There is much interest in blogs, wikis and podcasts. I imagine the uptake for these tools will increase when/if we make them readily available.

'''
'''Triumphs'''''

'''New and useful tools for Blackboard'''

*With the assistance of a developer and much consultation with users, we have developed a simple building block that allows our clients to download grades from Opscan (bubble sheet) results directly to Blackboard. The tool was built without stress or tears, came in on time and works beautifully! The tool will be very useful as last year alone over 100,000 tests were scanned at RCAT.

'''A successful upgrade to BB 8.0'''

*We recently upgraded to Blackboard 8.0 without any fuss muss or tears. I hear that the upgrade to 9 will be a bit tougher though.

'''New website redesign'''

*We completely revised the RCAT website to add a blog, twitter and a resource page. Take a peek – [http://www.rcat.utoronto.ca]

'''Improved student experience with consistent use of Blackboard'''

*We have achieved almost complete saturation of Blackboard with over 65,000 users. This gives students a more consistent experience as all courses are on Blackboard and allows for a measure of convenience –overall, enriching the student experience.

'''People are talking about new technology and teaching tools'''.

*Even though we do not have a standard lecture capture system on campus and even though I remain unconvinced that on demand university wide lecture capture is a good thing, users are engaged in talks involving the use of lecture capture on campus. I’ve been boning up on LC and have become a bit of a defacto expert on it. Getting faculty engaged in the use of technology is always a triumph for me – for better or worse – at least they’re thinking about it.

University of Toronto’s contribution

Activities

Blackboard implementation V7.2 enterprise
Stats
As of the end of the winter session:
*50,000 + users enrolled in active courses
*4,500 active courses
*Large number of organizations
*Five full time staff to centrally support faculty
*Currently deliver three to five training sessions a week that are Blackboard focused - basic to advanced
*Also deliver a large number of seminars, sessions, lunch and learns etc on various topics

Development
My department implemented three new building blocks for Blackboard
*A custom grouper version 3 – Highly complex tool that allows faculty to build custom groups based on baseline enrollments from the student information system. System allows for random assignment, self sign up, switching, start end dates, caps, batch enroll and other functions. Grouper is tied into the Gradebook by way of the:
*Gradebook by groups tool – Gives TAs, coursebuilders etc access only to those groups they should have assess too
*Add participants tool – Allows instructors and TAs to add student, TAs, coursebuilders etc who are not listed in the Student Information System
*Also tested an externally developed new Blogger for Blackboard – To be implemented in a few weeks

Podcasting, Lecture Casting
*Bravely (heroically one may say!) advocating for a free central streaming server for these tools. To be discussed further at the conference
*Researched a number of systems for lecture cast. Also to be discussed further at the conference.
*Ran a six person podcast pilot last year with the goal of teaching the staff in my department (and me) what we need to know about podcasting

Challenges

*Moving users from an existing home grown LMS to Blackboard – lots of grumbling!
*Huge university, decentralized to a fault. Duplication abounds, resources being wasted. Committees are formed to discuss how we can provide more common services – like streaming podcasts for all – but no one can seem to agree on formats, who pay and who supports the hardware.
o	Campus wide initiatives that will benefit all very difficult to get off the ground (see above reasons) e.g.
•	No readily available meeting software tools like Adobe Connect for online meetings
•	No central place to store and stream videos
•	No coordinated videoconferencing facilities or initiatives
•	No readily available Wiki

Optimism

With the adoption of Blackboard, things do seems to be coming together though. Staff, faculty and governance bodies are seeing the value of commonly available campus wide teaching with technology systems. More coordination looms on the horizon!

== Changes and Transformations ==

The Centre for University Teaching, one of four divisions of Teaching and Learning Support Services, has entered a period of substantial transformation. Christian Blanchette, whom many of you know, ended his term as Director of TLSS and moved to the Faculty of Education at the end of June. At that time the position was elevated to the level of Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) and is occupied since July 1 by Yves Herry, former Vice-Dean Research in the Faculty of Education. A priority of his mandate is the reshaping and strengthening of the Centre for University Teaching to enable it to play a key role in the university`s response to areas of concern identified by NSSE. As a consequence we anticipate substantial changes in the coming months.

== New Personnel ==

Robert Parson, Curriculum Design and Quality of Learning Specialist, arrived in January. His main responsibiity is to assist departments as they prepare for program evaluation and implementation of the OCAV-mandated learning expectations.

Nathaly Isabelle, Instructional Consultant (Educational Technologies), arrived a few weeks ago and will be working with departments and individual instructors on the pedagogically sound uses of educational technologies.

== Change in accommodations ==

The building we presently occupy is to be demolished to make way for a new building, so as of February we will be moving for two years into temporary accommodations.

ED Unit Highlights for 2008-2009:

•	Over 900 faculty, TA's, and other educators attended over 100 workshops, conferences and other educational development unit events.

•	Combined publications included 6 articles submitted or published in peer-reviewed journals and engagement in 3 on-going research projects.

•	Facilitated over 70 individual and departmental consultations with faculty, TA's, and other educators on course design, delivery and assessment.

•	40 curriculum course progression maps have been created and distributed to departments and colleges.

•	8 new undergraduate degree curriculum review and development projects have been added to the 16 projects initiated and carrying over since our last update.

•	5 external presentations were given by ED Unit staff at academic conferences or as invited speakers.

•	2 graduate credit courses were taught.

•	Piloted the use of our on-line curriculum mapping software off-campus with the University of Waterloo. Additional off-campus beta testing is pending.

•	Graduate Student Teaching Development Passport Program initiated.

•	Faculty Leadership in Teaching Program Pilot initiated (SoTL development program).

Challenges:

•	to continue to respond to the challenge of providing interdisciplinary and discipline-specific graduate student pedagogical development

•	satisfying increased range of and demand for support from faculty with reduced staffing during Peter Wolf’s leave

•	competition for space on campus is currently very high and it is often difficult to locate and secure suitable rooms for our events

Goals:

•	We are continuing to forge and formalize a team approach with our colleagues in TSS's Learning Technologies and Classroom Innovations group to support faculties in taking full advantage of educational technologies in course design.

'''Curriculum analytics: moving beyond analytics for identifying students at risk''' Niall Sclater - Jisc, UK

Learning analytics implementations have to date been mainly concerned with identifying students at academic risk. However there is far more that can potentially be achieved with data about students and their learning. Researchers have been identifying ways in which this data can be used to discover how well aspects of the curriculum are functioning. Niall Sclater will discuss some of the current innovations in this area and how Jisc in the UK is developing the underlying technical infrastructure to enable curriculum analytics.

'''Going beyond student success: examining what is intended, achieved and perceived in a curriculum''' Dale Lackeyram – University of Guelph

While much of our conversations have been focused on our learners and the variety of identities and contexts that they bring to the teaching-learning exchange, there is a unique opportunity to utilize learning analytics to examine what makes a “good” curriculum. The expanding landscape of demands on a curriculum has grown to include accountability and societal responsibility alongside more traditional requirements of being psychologically and cognitively sound. This presentation will delve into a transferable model of using analytics as a basis for exploring continuous curriculum improvement as we explore curriculum beyond elements of student success.
Nearly all students use social networking tools and mobile devices as a way to engage and communicate with their friends. To further facilitate student collaboration, Purdue has several new initiatives, including [http://www.itap.purdue.edu/studio/mixable/ Mixable], an application that builds connections by blending a student's course enrollment information with his or her network of friends that already exists within Facebook. Mixable enables students to collaboratively build and share their personal learning environments by using open tools (Facebook, Twitter, and Dropbox) and the most common mobile devices, while ultimately maintaining privacy. Another new Purdue application is [http://www.itap.purdue.edu/studio/hotseat/ Hotseat], a student polling system that is accessed by phones or other mobile devices. Based on his first hand experience in deploying new models for students engagement, Kyle will provide insights into the changing priorities and emerging opportunities for technology-enabled collaboration, beyond the LMS.

An extension on last year’s “Cloud and 2.0” discussion, this session will explore the new learning “ecosystem” from a institutional strategy, operational, and pedagogical perspective. As a recent Campus Technology article* commented: “progressive professors are making end runs around its [LMS’s] limitations by utilizing free web 2.0 and cloud-based tools -- tools that sit outside the walls of the LMS.”

The session will muse about the role of the university in supporting infrastructure, managing risk, and providing value-added services in the era of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs), third-party tools and resources, and cloud computing. We will also discuss the way learning is enabled and shaped by these different systems. [http://piratepad.net/9asbgc16NY Beyond the LMS: The new learning ecosystem - online doc]
