The Registered Nurse’s Association of Ontario (RNAO) offers Best Practice Guidelines for nurses working with individuals experiencing dementia, as well as delirium and depression":

The following case study from Imperial Valley College Nursing Department provides a profile, scenario, and questions that could be used as an in class exercise or as an assignment for nursing students:

The Portal of Geriatrics Online Education (POGOe) website offers many teaching resources, including case studies, which can be found by typing "case studies" into the website search box.

  • One dementia case study example for nursing students can be found and downloaded here. You must create an account through POGOe to download materials.

The Alzheimer's Association offers several training and education videos that would be useful for anyone wanting to know more about dementia:

The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario offers a free eLearning course based on the Best Practice Guidelines for Delirium, Dementia, and Depression:

  • The course can be found here: Delirium, Dementia, and Depression eLearning Course
    • This free eLearning course provides screening and care strategies, based on RNAO Best Practice Guidelines.
    • You must register for an online account in order to access the course. Anyone can register, you do not have to be a nurse.

Dementia Partnerships is a UK-based website for sharing knowledge and resources about dementia.

  • Several eLearning courses about dementia are available here: Dementia eLearning
    • The eLearning cover the following topics: Causes and symptoms, living with dementia, diagnosis, difficulties experienced, emotional impact, and positive communication.

Dementia Partnerships is a UK-based website for sharing knowledge and resources about dementia.

  • Powerpoint slides are available for download here: Essential Dementia Awareness
    • These short slideshows give an overview of dementia and person-centred approaches. These could be adapted to any health discipline needing an introduction to dementia.

The Alzheimer Society Canada offers several educational online videos:

Many videos are available through YouTube:

  • This short video demonstrates a dementia simulation. Dementia simulations are used to help people experience and understand what it might be like to have dementia.
  • The Alzheimer Society Niagara Region offers a simulation experience that can be arranged for students to participate in.

Flinders University in Australia offers a workbook for undergraduate healthcare students:

Dementia Partnerships is a UK-based website for sharing knowledge and resources about dementia.

    • These workbooks contain information, activities, and quizzes related to dementia. Educators may want to use the entire workbooks or just select individual exercises for in class activities or take-home assignments.
  • The first workbook is available for download as a Word document here: Essential Dementia Awareness
    • This workbook contains introductory information for those working with individuals with dementia.
  • A second workbook is available here: Further Knowledge in Dementia
    • This workbook is at a slightly more intermediate level than the first. It builds upon information presented in the first workbook.
  • The third workbook is available here: Behaviours That Challenge Us
    • This workbook focuses on theoretical background and practical solutions to responsive behaviours.
    • PowerPoint presentations are also available for download, to accompany each workbook.
