[edit] Best Practice Recommendations

The Registered Nurse’s Association of Ontario (RNAO) offers Best Practice Guidelines for preventing and addressing abuse and neglect of older adults:

  • The full recommendations are available to download in pdf format here: [1]
  • There is also a webinar available on the same page, which discusses the recommendations.
  • The recommendations are aimed at nurses, but are also relevant to other members of the interprofessional health care team.

The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario offers a free eLearning course based on the Best Practice Guidelines for elder abuse:

  • The course can be found here: Elder Abuse eLearning Course
    • This free eLearning course provides teaching to help understanding of elder abuse, and how to identify and address it.
    • You must register for an online account in order to access the course. Anyone can register, you do not have to be a nurse. This course is appropriate for any health-related discipline.

The Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect offers several teaching resources:

  • Here is a free pdf version of lecture slides intended to for a 50-minute lecture: An Introduction to Elder Abuse
    • The slides are directed towards nursing students, however, it could be adapted to other disciplines.
    • Some changes may need to be made as it is an American resource.
  • Here you can find trainer notes to accompany the slides.
