WebCT CE6 Chat Tool

From WebCT Wiki

The chat tool has been immensely in WebCT CE 6.

Chat can now be used to host meaningful synchronous conversations and has the added benefit of a shared whiteboard that was previously a standalone item.

The WebCT Chat tool has a very basic and straight-forward interface

  • The main window display a running log of what is being said starting from when you connected.
  • The right menu has a list of the participants.
  • The box at the bottom of the screen is where you can type a message. It will accept large amounts of text, but it will only let you see a few characters at a time. When you want to submit your message press the Enter key on your keyboard or click "Send"
  • The box at the top can show a whiteboard for drawing and uploading images, if the instructor has it turned on
  • To send a private message select the persons name from the right menu and then proceed to type the message.

[edit] Troubleshooting

  • The chat tool uses Java, please be sure that it is working on your computer and that you accept the Java security certificate that WebCT presents you with when you first log in. More information can be found in the Java article.
  • Some workplaces, hotels and authoritarian states block internet traffic on non-standard ports (http uses 80, https uses 443). The WebCT chat tool communicates with WebCT's 2304 port, and this may need to be allowed in order for you to connect.
