we from Bildungsportal Sachsen (http://www.bildungsportal.sachsen.de/olat) are using OLAT in an academic environement of several universities. We wanted a really good Java based solution, scanned the market and in our opinion you won't find a better open source product than OLAT in this field! The architecture is really good, flexible and stable, the user interface is more like a client application than a normal web-based software and the concept of course building blocks brings your course authors endless designing possibilites. Not to forget the dezentralized right management, variable course internal and external learning groups, RSS- and Mail-based notifications, IMS CP and QTI support, ..., ..., ...
