Grade Book

From WebCT Wiki

WebCT CE6 Grade Book
WebCT CE6 Grade Book
The grade book is an important part of any WebCT CE 6 course, regardless if marks are involved.

From within the grade book student marks can be entered or imported and ultimately released to students. The grade book is also where other instructors or TAs can be added to the course. In courses known at Brock as "Service Courses" students can also be a enrolled through the grade book.

The Grade Book can be found under the teach tab in the "Course Tools" section.

Contents

[edit] Managing Members

[edit] Adding Individuals to your course

In WebCT CE 6 all additional users are added through the "Enroll Members" button inside the Grade Book. Simply enter the existing WebCT user name of the individual you would like to add in the field marked "User name" and then check the box beside the role you would like to add this individual as and press "Enroll".

Please note that some roles, like student and designer, are mutually exclusive.

[edit] Giving TAs Access

This will give the TA access to your course in both "Teach" and "Student View" but your TAs do not have access to things like grades, assignments and test results unless you enable this level of access under Manage Course > Settings > Teaching Assistant Settings.

[edit] Working With Marks

[edit] Creating Columns

Columns can be created by choosing "Create Column" on the top left of the Grade Book.

You will have to choose is the column will hold "Numeric" information (just numbers) "Alphanumeric" (anything you can type) or be calculated and be based on a formula you will have to enter later. Letter grades can also be created based off of other existing columns.

The column will need a title/label.

You can optionally set what it is out of (maximum value) and the alignment and decimal place.

If you choose to release the column to students they will see their marks as it is entered. If you choose not to release the column now you can release it latter and all students will see their mark at the same time.

When done press "Save".

[edit] Calculated column Formulas

A calculated column requires you to add a formula for it to do its calculation by. This is done once the column is created by click the V chevron by its title and choosing "Edit Column Formula".

You will then be presented with a page to enter a formula into by clicking the buttons at the bottom, much like a calculator. It is important to note that you can not actually type in the formula area.

Bearing in mind what the raw marks will be and what the final percentage will be you can use the numbers, operators (*-+/) and functions to create your formula.

[edit] Formula Examples

Examples (your column names will vary):

  • Basic add-up-the-columns
 [Midterm] + [Essay] + [Final] + [Participation]
  • Basic add-up-the-columns and make the final exam that was out of 100 worth 30%
 [Midterm] + [Essay] + ([Final]*0.30) + [Participation]
  • Make final quiz mark the best three marks out of four quizzes
 SUM{[quiz 1],[Quiz 2],[Quiz 3],[Quiz 4]} - MIN{[quiz 1],[Quiz 2],[Quiz 3],[Quiz 4]}
  • Drop the best and worst marks for final quiz mark
 SUM{[quiz 1],[Quiz 2],[Quiz 3],[Quiz 4]} - MIN{[quiz 1],[Quiz 2],[Quiz 3],[Quiz 4]} - MAX{[quiz 1],[Quiz 2],[Quiz 3],[Quiz 4]}

[edit] Letter Grade

Letters grades can be created and based off of existing numeric columns.

Choose from the "Create Column" button "Letter Grade", give it a title and choose if you will release it now.

Once the column is created select the chevron beside the column title and choose "Edit Letter Grade Scheme". You can then modify both what column to is to be based on and what letter grades should coincide with what number range and save the modifications.

[edit] Reordering Columns

This article title "Reorder" gives the best visual demonstration of how to reorder something in WebCT.

[edit] Releasing Grades To Students

[edit] A checklist for releasing grades

  1. Be sure that you have the "My Grades" tool in your student view. If not you can add it in the "Build" or "Teach" tab via "Manage Course" > "Tools" > check off "My Grades" and press "Save".
    • Be sure that you have the "My Grades" revealed too. You can confirm this via "Manage Course" > "Course Menu" confirm that the button beside "Grade Book" DOES NOT READ "Show link" indicating that it's currently hidden, if it is, click the "Show Link" button to show the link.
  2. Make sure the columns you would like to release to students are released. To check:
    1. In the grade book find "Grade Book Options" at the top right and choose "Column Settings".
    2. Find the line the read "Released to students" and be sure the column you want to release says "Yes". If it says "No" click it and the column will be released.
