Chat: Protocol
From WebCT Wiki
This is a chat protocol you might consider using, it is by no means the rules of WebCT.
Online Chat Protocol
So that our online chat conference proceeds in an orderly manner, the following protocol has been developed.
- Log onto a chat room a couple of minutes before the chat conference begins. The conference is recorded so a copy of the conversation will be saved and could be sent to you electronically as a text file.
- The specific conference topic posted in the course content will guide our discussion.
- The order of responding is the order in which you log onto the conference. Your name will appear in order of log on to the right side of the conference room screen. Do not count your instructor in the response rotation unless the instructor requests this.
- Many of you will want to reply to a posted comment so please wait for your instructor to signal "Free for All" time - then you can reply in any order. Your instructor will signal when this period is over and the next topic/issue begins.
- Be prepared for some frustration about your typing speed and the ability to read comments of others. The conference tends to proceed rapidly but it is important to allow wait time for the next person to respond in order rather than "jump in" assuming the person ahead of you has chosen not to make a comment.
- Once the first person in the log on order has responded, don't wait for your instructor to signal the next person; once a posting has been made, the next person posts their comment and so forth. One strategy that helps speed the conference along is for each of you to compose your message then wait your turn before hitting ?enter? to post on the message board.
- To create a comment, place your cursor in the message box at the bottom of the screen and begin typing. When you've finished, hit ENTER. This posts your message. Don't worry or apologize about spelling or grammar - we'd spend the whole conference in apology.
