[edit] About WebDAV
WebDAV is a way to access your WebCT files as if they are a folder on your own computer.
Managing your uploaded files with WebCT's File Manager is easier with CE6 since it uses a Java My Computer Applet to allow multiple file uploads. However, WebDAV is still a fast, convenient way to access your WebCT course files without using the WebCT interface.
WebDAV stands for "Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning". It is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol that allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote Web servers. Use of WebDAV is available with WebCT 3.8 & 4.x & CE6. In order to take advantage of this feature you will need to have software that understands how to use WebDAV.
That's raelly thinking out of the box. Thanks!
[edit] Setting up WebDAV for YOUR computer
Once you've read the above section on how to get your WebDAV address please proceed to adding the connection to your PC.
[edit] WebDAV and Dreamweaver
I found that using WebDAV in Dreamweaver for website publishing was very efficient. You have identical remote and local folder structure and the last edit time as well as What You See Is What You Get working area, life can’t be easier.
Note: WebDAV in Dreamweaver does not work with MX or CS3. Only 2004 version.
Here is how you set up a WebDAV connection for your WebCT course in Dreamweaver.
- Get the WebDAV URL from WebCT, please refer to Finding out the WebDAV address for your course
- Open Dreamweaver and click on “Site”
- Click on “New site” in the drop down menu
- In the pop-up window, click "Local Info" define your local site name and folder, which is where you store your course files on your computer
- Click “Remote Info” and then choose “WebDAV” from the drop down menu
- Click on “Setting” and input your WebDAV URL, the UserID and Password in the pop-up window.
- Click “OK”
- Connect to your remote site.
- Now you can drag and drop or use upload and download function just like FTP!
