The mandate of the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation is to support, promote and advance the quality of teaching at Brock University. Our programs and services are designed to meet the needs and interests of faculty members and teaching assistants.

The CPI currently provides individual consultations and group workshops about issues related to teaching and learning in higher education. Consulting the CPI can enhance instructor's curriculum design and use of assessments, learning management systems and teaching strategies in and outside classroom.

Just in time for the conference season, this workshop will examine the copyright aspects of research promotion and publication. Join Chabriol Colebatch, Brock's Copyright Coordinator/Legal Advisor on Wed. May 23rd, 10-11 am, TH 253 where she will answer questions such as:

  • Can you include copyright materials in your conference presentations and posters?
  • Can you include images and figures from publications in a research poster?
  • How will presenting your work affect future publications?

Join us from 8:30-noon on Thursday April 26 as we explore the scope of pedagogical innovation, what it means to innovate and how we can impact student learning. 

Opening remarks by Dr.Murray Knuttila, VP Academic and Dr.Barry Joe, Director of the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation will be followed by a thematic review of Senate's investigations into innovative pedagogy by Dr.James Mandigo, Vice-Chair of Senate. 

There will be numerous opportunities for you to share your voice and experiences in addition to learning from others. 

As the E-Learning initiative moves into Phase II with a new call for proposals, two mid-morning panels will explore innovative practices like peer helping, e-portfolios and creating online courses. 

A free breakfast will be served at 8:30 am in the Guernsey Market.

The Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic is pleased to announce Phase II of the E-Learning Initiative and invites proposals from all full-time teaching staff for on-line courses/hybrid courses to be funded and developed in 2012 in collaboration with the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation (CPI). 

Proposals are encouraged under the following general rubrics but this list is not exhaustive and selections will not be limited to these categories:
  • a large enrolment course
  • a high-demand course (for example, a mandatory course required for majors or a prescribed Core and Context course)
  • a niche course (i.e. a course the content of which is not offered elsewhere in Ontario)
  • a first-year course
  • a graduate course
  • a hybrid course (for example, a course that is 50% online and 50% face to face; a course that takes advantage of a “flipped curriculum”)
  • a course that is constructed around an innovative methodology.  This could include the use of digital tools in novel and creative ways to support the underlying pedagogical strategy, to achieve the explicit learning outcomes of the course, or to evaluate student learning by exploiting the nature of the digital environment and the capabilities of select digital tools.
  • existing courses that have been adapted to take advantage of digital tools and/or the connected digital environment to foster learning.

On Friday January 27, an intimate group of faculty, staff and students gathered to discuss teaching and learning in the 21st century on Brock's campus.

Five recipients of The Chancellor's Chair for Teaching Excellence shared their research findings on pedagogical innovations. 

John MacNamara shared his experience transforming a second year child development course into a community service learning course through the use of reflective portfolios and a reconfigured lecture format. Enhanced connections across the child & youth studies curriculum have provided relevant situated learning opportunities for students in schools and community organizations.

Gail Frost & Maureen Connolly shared their research into "Real People, Deep Learning", where they replace the paper case study with clients from the community so students have an authentic scenarios and opportunities for multiple perspectives and complex interactions.

Murry Wickett is also using authentic learning experiences in a fourth year History capstone course anchored on peer mentoring program connecting 4th year students with 1st year students in order to increase engagement and retention.

Don Cyr showed pedagogical uses of video screen capture as a way of addressing multiple learning styles in statistics classes in the Finance program for domestic and international second-language students.

Another two roundtables provided rich student perspectives on the impact of digital culture on their learning and their responses to experiential learning opportunities.

Chancellor's Chair for Teaching Excellence awards are adjudicated annually. Deadline is March 2012. Interested applicants should contact Dr. Barry Joe ext. 4707  or Dr. Jill Grose ext 4392. Back to Class: Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century

Friday January 27th 2012      1:00 – 3:30 pm      TH253

How is teaching and learning in the 21st century different than teaching practices of earlier generations? What role do students play? What role does technology play? How does the community interact and engage with the university classroom?

Today’s professors and students not only engage in innovative pedagogies but also research the impact of those pedagogies. Join us on January 27th when 5 professors and 5 students share their teaching and learning insights and expertise. The recipients of the Brock University Chancellor’s Chairs for Teaching Excellence will facilitate roundtable sessions regarding their scholarly projects, which include an exploration of connecting students with the community, peer mentorship, service learning, and the pedagogical uses of video screen capture. In turn, students will host a roundtable at which they will share their perspectives on the impact of digital culture on their learning and their responses to experiential learning opportunities.

The afternoon will follow a roundtable discussion format and attendees are welcome to join a table for discussion according to their time and interests.

Ms. Chabriol Colebatch has been appointed to the position of Copyright Coordinator/Legal Advisor for a one-year period, effective January 23, 2012. Ms Colebatch originally practiced law in Australia, specializing in copyright, trade-mark and privacy law. Upon immigrating to Ontario, she worked as the Copyright Officer for the C4, a consortium of 6 Ontario university technology transfer offices. She also served as McMaster University's lead contact for Access Copyright.

Ms. Colebatch was recently called to the Ontario Bar and subsequently worked as  in-house legal counsel at Toronto Community Housing Corporation.

Ms. Colebatch will be based in the Library, and will report jointly to the Director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Educational Technologies and to the University Librarian. She will play a leadership role in copyright education, and will provide the University with legal advice on matters related to copyright.

WHO: Instructors new to Isaak the Brock University's Sakai-based Learning Management System

WHAT: This workshop is designed to be a hands-on orientation to Isaak, Brock University's Sakai-Based Learning Management System (LMS) and is intended for instructors who are new to Isaak. The format consists of a one hour overview of the tools in Isaak and how to use them, followed by hands-on work with your course materials. Instructors are encouraged to bring their working WiFi ready laptop and course materials. Desktop computers will be available as well.

WHEN: Monday August 27, 10:00 am - noon, Classroom A (ST228)

Following this session from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm is an Academic Integrity at Brock: Using Turnitin.com workshop.  Registration is required as space is limited.
