[edit] Summer Institute 2012 will be held at the University of Ontario Institute for Technology (UOIT)

Dates: August 1-3, 2012

Location: UOIT North Campus 2000 Simcoe St N[1] ERC building, room 1058.

Registration: The cost of attendance at the OUCEL Summer Institute 2012 is $200.00 per person - this includes attendance at the full event and supper on the evening of the second day. To register, please download and fill out a registration form [2]. Mail the completed form and a cheque payable to UOIT to the address indicated on the form.

Accommodations: We have reserved 10 2-bedroom suites at the UOIT South Village residence. The nightly rate is $59.95 + tax. 1-1:15pm: Welcome from Laurie Harrison

1:15-2pm: “Lightning round” institutional updates

As a warmup and icebreaker activity, participants will share a short institutional update - focusing on one triumph and one challenge over the past year.

2-2:30pm: Welcome from Bill Muirhead, Associate Provost, Academic and IT

Bill will be connecting with us via Adobe Connect from beautiful Victoria BC to welcome delegates to this year’s summer institute. We will follow up with an overview of the next few days.

2:30-4pm: BVirtual Remote Proctor Demo

Rick Beaudry will join us for a demonstration of the BVirtual Live Online Proctoring service. From the BVirtual website: “B Virtual provides a seamless remote proctoring experience for students to take exams online. Our combination of people, process and technology provide a level of integrity to the examination process that raises the bar for Proctored exams.”

9:30-10:30: AODA Roundtable: Accessible media strategies

In this roundtable discussion, we would like to focus specifically on how institutions across the province are approaching the development, conversion and administration of media, focusing primarily on videos (closed captioning and described video). The roundtable will produce a shared resource guide outlining tools, services and strategies. This hands-on workshop will begin with a mini-panel with Laurie Harrison, Giulia Forsythe and Jaymie Koroluk, who will share their experiences with leveraging technology in several key areas (blended learning, social media and synchronous communication technology). Participants will then work in groups to brainstorm and develop ideas around several key questions: 1) What are the institutional priorities we need to align with? 2) What are our key faculty development goals and strategies? 3) How can we leverage technology to implement strategies and meet our goals? 1-2:30: Terry Anderson on the “MOOC Phenomenon” (via Adobe Connect)

Dr. Terry Anderson, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Distance Education at Athabasca University will be joining us via Adobe Connect for a lively discussion about the recent MOOC phenomenon. Terry will talk with us about the notion of “unbundling” the University, and the threats and opportunities presented by MOOCs.

2:30-4: Beyond the LMS: The new learning ecosystem

An extension on last year’s “Cloud and 2.0” discussion, this session will explore the new learning “ecosystem” from a institutional strategy, operational, and pedagogical perspective. As a recent Campus Technology article* commented: “progressive professors are making end runs around its [LMS’s] limitations by utilizing free web 2.0 and cloud-based tools -- tools that sit outside the walls of the LMS.”

The session will muse about the role of the university in supporting infrastructure, managing risk, and providing value-added services in the era of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs), third-party tools and resources, and cloud computing.
