Article- Wheatman, Debra1, Debra@careersdonewrite.com. "USE SOCIAL MEDIA to MANAGE YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION and SUPPORT YOUR BRAND." Career Planning & Adult Development Journal, vol. 32, no. 2, Summer2016, pp. 107-113.

This article is great for people who are not sure how they should be branding themselves online. The article goes over different social media platforms and explains what you should be posting online and what you should not be. It discusses why creating a brand for yourself is beneficial. The article focuses on why a social media present is beneficial for people in search of new opportunities, especially jobs.

'Now more than ever it is critical that business professionals, whether or not they are searching for new opportunities understand and leverage social media appropriately.' (p.107) This quote is exactly what the article is about. It takes different social media platforms and touches on how you should be promoting yourself within them. The article focuses on explaining to the reader that they need to care about what they are making public to the community around them. The author wants people to promote a polished, well-represented image of themselves online to help them further their career. It notes the benefits of what each platform has to offer and how what your post could benefit you in other ways then for employers. Platforms such as YouTube can help you gain communication skills and become comfortable in front of a camera, Pinterest can you help you categorize your ideas and even give you new ones, LikedIn and others can help you network. Social media is never going to go away; now is the time to give yourself a brand online to show viewers your professional abilities and create a positive image for yourself. This article will help you start building that online identity and help your future endeavors.

The article gets right to the point within the first paragraph. It expresses the idea that you are what you post and that you should care about what you post. The fact that you should be posting online with a purpose. The article also goes into detail about different social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and YouTube. The author then goes into further detail by saying what a person could be posting on each platform. This is a great aspect because many people are unaware of what employers are looking for when they are searching your social media platforms.

The main weakness for this article is the fact that it does not give you examples of what you should be posting on social media The article does not touch base on who would be looking at your social media accounts. Now day’s employers look at your social media accounts to get an idea of the type of person you are and if you fit in with their company ideals. The article though explains what you should be posting online and what now, but not why. Another weakness I noticed about the article was that it does not always stay on track. For example, the article references how posting videos on YouTube can be beneficial since it is a social media platform, but then it discusses investing in equipment. This aspect would make sense if they need great quality content, but realistically whether or not your video is in 1080 HD it does not define who you are as a person. Equipment you own does not brand you online. On an additional note the writer also touched on Pinterest as a platform. Personally, I believe that platforms such as YouTube and Pinterest are not the most important outlets that people should be focusing on to “impress” employers, but I can see how it can be used to help certain career fields.
