Social Media Phenomenon in Children's Life

The topic I choose to discuss and study deeply is ‘Social Media Phenomenon in Children’s Life.’ Social media can provide a supportive environment to explore a new world, which the interactions are having the different forms and types. For instance, most teens use online the networks to extend the friendships, profile updating with personal information or lifestyle or big events, photos, videos sharing, comments to friends’ posts, blog, study purpose, music, television shows, games, knowledge news, fashion and other aspects of teen culture. Marshall McLuhan’s mentioned that “the medium of communication shapes a society more than the content of its communications - The Medium is the Message (and the message).” (Tham, 2012)

Social Media Phenomenon in Children's Life

Social media has become a common phenomenon in the society. “We are communicating creatures,” writes Charles Meadow, "the user, and the user’s community in reshaping media perspectives in the users." Social media is a platform to offer users’ interactions with one and others and bring people closer than ever before. Digital revolution has changes to our ways of looking at identity, values and connecting with others. The structures of language, as a message, tell people how to think about current period, space, things and ongoing processes. Speaking to the effects of social media on children development, growth, health, knowledge, and behavior are not known yet, this problem is topical and may provide by different articles to better understand the issue.

Tham, Jason (2012). Media Perspectives: How Social Media Reshape Consciousness, Redefine Identities.

Firstly, it is peculiarity to study a special age group of the population - children and teenager. It is good to use ideas provided by Tham Jason in his work, it covers several research to better understand the impact of social media from the perspectives of the medium, the users, and the user’s community. The article first identifies the platform of the internet as a network medium in creating a new model of communication and share message, sheds light on users’ sense of online identity, unfolds the new system of participators as social cyborgs in virtual communities, they have freedom to either being the player or the one choose to watch (creeping/stalking). (Tham, 2012) In sum, the digital revolution has brought convenience and changes to our ways of looking at perspectives of the medium and connecting with others. Just as Tham describes, ‘we are communicating creatures,’ we now have a second choice to lives behind the screen of our computers and devices and social media is the best tools to fulfills the curiousness of teens. Social networking sites offer ‘a space in which people can address this need to belong by using the online platform provided by the participators that enable conversations and information gathering, expressing opinions, expressing emotions, and influencing others.” (Tham, 2012) The weakness of this article, Tham wrote a lot of personal opinions without finding data to support his ideas. He also didn’t throw out few ideas, which effective to prevent teens away from the badness.

Impact of social media on adolescent behavioral health

Children are vulnerable, they are easy to be affected and they exactly are the main users of all the social networks. Teens and children are the groups of people need their parents to take care of what they are watching and following; wisdom and understanding of the phenomenon they should follow on. Social media are around and everywhere, smartphone, chats, television content, video sharing, apps, photos, ads, news are all called social media, which media platform is one of the first things children learn. Children normally never think of the message they search, but all the information about the tools they visited, it can be a real threat to used to against them. In the following paragraphs, I would like to go through the new ways for teens and children to create and navigate their social environments.

Carroll, J.A. & Kirkpatrick, R.L. (2011). Impact of social media on adolescent behavioral health.

The second article is about Pros and cons of social media phenomenon in children’s life. The most part of the day children spend hours and hours using new technologies and internet platform to search whatever they like, they visit social media sites, using smartphone and video to gather information and communicate with each other. Children present a vulnerable group of the population, it is easy to affect them, which is important to navigate their social environments. The article also mentioned that most of the teenagers use the media platform to developing the identity, emerging sexuality, physical development and moral consciousness. In brief, the effect of social media on grown-up teens and children are important, so better understand children’ thoughts, interests and ideas and will help to develop them. Carroll & Kirkpatrick made a clear statement in the beginning to benefits of social media on adolescent health. They also draw a graph and data to support their ideas, which said most teens use online network to extend the friendships, gaining knowledge of outside world. Over 90% of parents buying a smartphone for their kids because they can “keep in touch no matter where I am.” Of course, teens have found that they were more independence and freedom to owning a smartphone that allows them to use for personal purposes. The weakness of this article, Carroll & Kirkpatrick points out that parents should navigate the social environment of their kid, which face to face to talk with their kids. To me, the way parents build up their activity in media is also a good or a bad example for children to follow.
